Enhanced Music Jukebox System

I created this jukebox as an independent work project in the fall of 2003 in the Department Of Computer Science at Princeton University. My advisor for this project was Professor Brian Kernighan.

My paper can be read in PDF, word, and HTML formats.

The system is running off a PowerMac G4 400 and is running Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar). It uses a touch screen system from MagicTouch. The interface is written in PHP and is web-based. Safari is used as the browser interface to the system and the Saft plugin is used for kiosk features. The music player is iTunes 4.1.

I created the jukebox for use in the tap room of my
eating club, the Colonial Club of Princeton. From January 2003 to January 2004 I was tech chair and webmaster of Colonial Club. The old CD jukebox in the tap room had been broken for almost a year (you can see the cutout shape in the wall where it used to be). There had been talk of an "mp3 jukebox" for Colonial since January 2003 but since there had been no such products available yet and the development task would be too great to take on I waited until I could do the project as independent work. Additionally the creation of the jukebox presented some very interesting design problems in the areas of user interaction, race conditions, and many issues that Professor Kernighan referred to as "system issues." The experience of creating and installing this system was both fun and frustrating but very rewarding. The jukebox is now used regularly at Colonial.

Here are some photos of the jukebox construction. That first one is me.
